Instructional Design work is creative, tedious, nit-picky, and generally enjoyable for those in the field. IDs need to be the master of all sorts of techy applications. Usually, a good sign that you will make a good ID is if you are THAT person that everyone goes to fix their computer or answer software-related questions.

But how do Instructional Designers manage the more mundane but oddly creative data management piece that LMS Administration? So many of us write courses for others that cannot be included in our professional portfolios because they are the property of our present and previous employers.

Several LMS providers offer free accounts that are limited in scope and capabilities. Moodle is one, but the add-ons to make it look great can be costly. I have worked in Brightspace by D2L (extensively), Canvas, Moodle, and Blackboard. However, at the start of 2020, I discovered Talent LMS. They have a free option that can serve as an excellent, nicely customizable LMS for those interested in creating an LMS portfolio. Talent LMS has added exceptional features over the last year and represents an excellent low-cost LMS for any business.

The attached LMS link is a portfolio I created and customized very quickly. I added a couple of older Ed. D. projects I created in Rise 360 to demonstrate SCORM compliance. Hopefully, over the next few months, I will be able to create a rich LMS portfolio in addition to the standard website.
